ABOUT PINGWATCH

A clearer view of your connection.

PingWatch is a free browser-based utility for observing latency, ping fluctuation, and connection interruptions over time.

What PingWatch helps you investigate

Short, occasional slowdowns can be hard to describe after they have passed. PingWatch records a sequence of real round-trip measurements so you can review whether latency was steady, changed noticeably, or included unsuccessful probes during a 1-, 5-, or 10-minute test.

This can help you observe connection behavior while troubleshooting voice chat interruptions, inconsistent responsiveness, or a period of lag. It does not identify the cause of a problem or diagnose your internet provider.

Two measurement modes

WebSocket Ping

WebSocket Ping keeps a connection open to the selected PingWatch region. About once per second, the browser sends a probe and times its echo with a monotonic clock. The initial connection setup is not included in each reading.

HTTP Ping

HTTP Ping times a no-cache request and response to PingWatch. This measures HTTP round-trip latency to the PingWatch server, not an ICMP echo request.

How lag spikes and fluctuation are summarized

The lag spike detector compares each successful reading with the median of up to 20 preceding successful readings. It requires five baseline readings by default and flags a spike when the reading is at least 50 ms above, and at least twice, that baseline. The current reading is not used to calculate its own baseline. Consecutive elevated readings are grouped into one incident.

Estimated jitter is the mean absolute change between consecutive successful measurements. Connection stability is the percentage of completed probes that succeeded. Three consecutive unsuccessful probes are recorded as a possible interruption. Unsuccessful probes are not confirmed packet loss and may have several causes.

Understanding Your Ping Results

PingWatch measures round-trip latency to its own endpoints—not to every website, application, or destination on the internet. WebSocket and HTTP measurements use different transport behavior, and neither is an ICMP ping.

Results can differ from latency to other services because of server location, network routing, transport protocol, and server conditions. PingWatch cannot detect every lag spike or determine the exact cause of an unstable connection. Unsuccessful probes are not, by themselves, proof of packet loss or a specific network fault.

Continuous monitoring can help make patterns easier to observe. Latency fluctuations may affect voice or video calls, remote work, browsing, online services, and gaming, but PingWatch does not diagnose the underlying cause.

The tool is free to use in a browser and does not require an account. The web application and its endpoints are hosted services; see the Privacy Policy for details about browser storage and technical request processing.
